Invisalign is a great way to straighten your teeth without the hassle of metal braces. With clear, removable aligners, you can work toward your dream smile with more comfort and flexibility. But what happens if your trays start to feel loose or they don’t seem to be fitting quite right?
If your Invisalign trays aren’t tracking (fitting comfortably and moving your teeth as planned), it could slow down your treatment or affect your final results. Let’s take a look at the signs of poor tracking, what causes it, and what you can do to get your treatment back on track.
What Does “Not Tracking” Mean?
Invisalign trays are designed to gently move your teeth from one position to the next. When everything’s going as planned, each new set of aligners should fit your teeth snugly. If the trays feel loose, have noticeable gaps, or don’t seem to “snap on” properly, your teeth may not be moving the way they should.
This is what we call “poor tracking.” And while it’s not uncommon, it’s something you’ll want to fix sooner rather than later.
Signs Your Invisalign Trays Aren’t Tracking Properly
If you’re not sure whether your aligners are doing their job, here are a few signs to watch out for:
- Your trays feel loose or shift when you talk
- There’s a visible gap between the aligner and your teeth
- You’re feeling less pressure than usual
- New trays don’t fit as tightly as expected
- You’re behind schedule on your treatment plan
Common Reasons Invisalign Aligners Become Loose
Poor tracking can happen for a few reasons, including:
Not Wearing Aligners Long Enough:
Invisalign works best when you wear the trays for 20–22 hours a day. If you’ve been taking them out for extended periods—or forgetting to wear them overnight—your teeth may not be keeping up with the treatment schedule.
Changing Trays Too Soon:
Switching to the next set of aligners before your teeth are ready can cause poor tracking. Always follow the schedule given by your dentist or orthodontist.
Warped or Damaged Trays:
Hot water, improper cleaning, or even chewing on the trays can cause them to warp and lose their shape.
Skipped Attachments or Aligner Chewies:
If you’re not using your chewies or missed out on attachments, your trays may not seat fully on your teeth.
What You Can Do to Improve Invisalign Tracking
You don’t necessarily need to start over. Here are a few steps that can help:
1. Wear Your Aligners Consistently
Make sure you’re hitting that 20–22 hour mark every day. Set reminders if needed—and avoid removing them unless you’re eating, drinking (anything but water), or brushing your teeth.
2. Use Aligner Chewies
These small, soft cylinders help close any gaps between your aligners and teeth. Use them several times a day, especially when starting a new tray.
3. Go Back to a Previous Tray (if advised)
If a new tray isn’t fitting, your dentist may recommend wearing the previous set a bit longer before trying again.
4. Contact Your Dentist Early
The sooner we know there’s a problem, the easier it is to fix. Don’t wait weeks to mention loose trays—bring it up as soon as you notice it.
When to Call Your Invisalign Provider
If your trays have been loose for more than a few days or you notice consistent tracking issues, it’s time to schedule a check-in. You may need an adjustment to your treatment plan, a new scan, or fresh trays to get things back on course.
